Dutch Enlightenment January 29, 2008

Filed under: Furniture — Kim @ 10:32 pm

Dutch designer Hans Meiboom must have had an unlighted moment when he came up with this lamp. The lamp, shaped like a book, has the title “The Enlightenment”. I think it is very beautiful. I might even buy it for my new library. You can find out more, by clicking here. This directs you to the English page of the website.

Filed under: Books all sorts, Miscellaneous — Kim @ 10:39 am

I just found this fun online program which enables you to make your own book cover. You can choose different animals for the cover picture and different colors. You can type the titles you like. After you are done, you can save the cover and a link to it is provided. Give it a try! Click here. Do not forget to post the link to your cover in the comments! (This is mine.)

Click to give books January 26, 2008

Filed under: Bookish Companies, Communities — Kim @ 1:59 am

I ask your attention for this great initiative I have recently come across. You can give books to children who really need them by just clicking a button. Every click is registered and sponsors pay for your click. This money is used to buy books for the children. You can find out more via this website.

If you have a website, you can help too. You can put a (small) banner on your website. This redirects your visitors to the website, where they only have to click the orange button. Every time someone clicks on it, money will be paid by sponsors. Click here to download a banner.

Bookish wallpaper I January 26, 2008

Filed under: Books all sorts, Handy, Miscellaneous — Kim @ 1:39 am

I thought you might like some wallpaper. No, not the stuff for your walls, but the things for your computer desktop. I browsed the web for some nice large bookish images to make your computer a bit more bookish. These are the a view I came up with. I will post more of them next week. (Click the image to see the large file.)

In case you do not know how to set the image as a wallpaper, do the following: Click a picture above and right click on the large image. Choose ‘save as’ and save the picture on your computer. When it is saved, right click the file and choose ‘set as wallpaper’. Hey presto!

Roman shelving system January 23, 2008

Filed under: Furniture — Kim @ 12:11 am

Well, almost. The designer, Sean Yoo, got his idea for this shelving unit when he visited Pompeii in Italy. There, he saw a roman wall which is build by means of the ‘opus incertum‘ technique. After some further research, he came up with the ‘Opus Shelving System’. It is very light in weight, but yet very strong. So is the price. Learn more about the shelves here.

Thanks to Arlen for the link!

PS. Speaking of shelves. There are some new entries on Your Shelves! Click here to see the shelves of other book lover’s. (And do not by shy to send in your own!)

I’m an amazing blogger! January 22, 2008

Filed under: Meme — Kim @ 11:56 pm

At least, that is what Kylie of Kylie’s Book Nook thinks. Thank you so much for your kind words about this blog and for the meme, Kylie! The meme beholds that I “have to confess seven weird or random facts about myself”. Okay. I will try to make them different from a similar meme I did before. (To be found here.)

Here it goes. It saves me the trouble of making a card and sending it to PostSecret, which is one of my favorite blogs. Haha!

1. I like to work on this blog very late at night. Sometimes even in and/or until the early morning. I like the peace and quite of the night.

2. I have Reiki level I and II. (If you do not know what it is, or like to learn more, click here.)

3. When I was young, everybody loved Vanilla Ice and the other popular music of that era. I listened to Kate Bush.

4. It is my birthday in a couple of minutes. I was born on January 23. 1979.

5. At the moment, one of my best friends is someone I never met. We correspond very extensive about our love for books and reading.

6. I feel so proud that so many people like my blog.

7. As a little girl, I promised myself I would own a Mercedes car at some point in my life.

That’s it folks! Now you know everything about me. The person(s) I would like to tag as an Amazing Blogger is… Ivan and Sonja of Bookstore Guide. Now they have to come up with the seven facts! I think they are amazing bloggers, with a fantastic website. Do check out their blog!

Books to cherish January 18, 2008

Filed under: Bookish Companies — Kim @ 2:40 am

A special bookish friend brought a wonderful publisher to my attention. It is called the Folio Society. This company prints all sorts of books, from science to fiction and everything in between. They have made it their mission to make the books look beautiful.

Special paper, fantastic illustrations and beautiful (natural!) bindings. And for the collectors and other bibliophiles amongst us: all the books come in a slipcase. To top it all off, the books are quite affordable! (But not for yours truly who just bought a house…)

This is a book lover’s dream… I have to say it makes me greedy. I want every book they ever published! Each book is a treasure. The thought and the time put into the printing process is unbelievable. If you click here you will go to their home page. From there you can choose your country and browse their books.

Have fun! And remember: Kimbooktu is not responsible for any debt you got into from looking at this website, haha!

Thanks to my dear bookish friend Martin for the find.

Dress a librarian! January 18, 2008

Filed under: Humour — Kim @ 12:54 am

Now for something completely wacky. If you follow this link, you get the chance to dress a librarian. Get her out of her boring clothes and give her the costume you like. I wonder what got into the person who thought and developed this… But I have to say, it is kind of fun to do. Have fun!

Altered Book Artists January 18, 2008

Filed under: Art — Kim @ 12:45 am

As you know, I love art and I love books. (Hence my competition! For more information, click here.) I have posted about ‘Altered Book Art’ before. Even though the artists destroy books, they make something beautiful out of them. (Who can forget the work of Brian Dettmer, to be found here.) I believe they love books and get inspired by them. If you like to see some altered book art, go to the category section and click ‘Art’.

You can also follow this link. It is a page of The International Society of Altered Book Artists. Get inspired and make something for my contest!

Play Away! January 14, 2008

Filed under: Bookish Companies, Bookish news — Kim @ 1:51 pm

There is a new e-book around, the Playaway. The book is also the player, which looks like a book. Get it? If you buy this audio-book all you have to do is plug in some earphones. There a lots of different genres and titles available. The books are a bit expensive though. I wonder if people are willing to pay much, much more for an e-book, just because it is easy. How much work is it to download something to a computer or MP3 player? To solve this problem, the company created a program in which you send back a book and get a discount on the next: RePlay.

You can find more information about the books here. Please, let me know what you think of it in the comments.
