Filed under: Book Shops — kimbooktu @ 1:28 am

As promised, in this post my ‘review’ of another book shop. This is my second ‘reportage’ in the series “The bookstore in…” (Click here to read the previous one.) The bookstore that is the subject of this article is a little bit further from home. Last week I visited The Reading Room in Las Vegas. Click on ‘more’ to read the story.

Wish list material October 30, 2007

Filed under: Clothing, Gifts, Handy, Jewelry — kimbooktu @ 4:01 pm

I just learned about this great American gift store, Signals. With the holidays coming up, this might be of use to you. Either to seek out a gift for somebody, or to add a thing or two to your own wish list. Signals sells, amongst other stuff, great bookish products and gadgets. If you have their catalog at home, get seated and drool over pages 32 trough 35. If you do not have it at home, click on the page numbers to see the catalog online: 32, 33, 34, 35. Or click here to order the physical catalog.

Thanks to Arlen for e-mailing me about this!

The capitol of my country has the honor to be the World Book Capital of 2008. On the 23rd of April, Amsterdam will follow up Bogota in this Bookish Event. I cannot wait to enjoy one year of bookish fun in a city that is finally close enough to take part in the festivities. If you want to learn more, click here for the website about Amsterdam World Book Capital in English. (Or here for the page in Dutch.)

I’m Back! October 30, 2007

Filed under: About the website — kimbooktu @ 3:12 pm

Hello you readers! Kimbooktu has returned from the City of Sin. My bookness, Las Vagas is one strange, kitsch city! Very loud, very over the top. I am still not sure what to make of it… Highlight were definitely the fountains of the Bellagio.

As promised in the previous post, I visited The Reading Room in the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. I am working on the story about it. You will find it here in the next couple of days. Apparently, there are more bookshops in the the vicinity of the Strip. Too bad, I read the comment too late.

Anyway, I am back and plan on spoiling you with some great posts to thank you for your patience! I will try read and process your e-mails as soon as I can too. This means: either post the gadgets, you wrote me about, or update the A-Z list with your links. Thanks for sending me so much inspiration during my trip! I was hoping for a couple shelves/libraries. But you cannot have everything…

PS. I have now updated the A-Z list. At this moment there are 223 bookish blogs on the list.

Kimbooktu goes Vegas October 19, 2007

Filed under: About the website, Book Shops — kimbooktu @ 1:59 pm

I have to go to Las Vegas for work from 20 to 27 October, so I am going to leave you for a week. I am quite looking forward to my trip, since I have never been to Vegas before. I would not be Kimbooktu, if I did not check for bookstores in the area. Click on ‘more’ to discover the bookish attraction I will hopefully visit on the strip. And read how you can ‘survive’ without me the next week.

Catalog your books online! (Including Test) October 18, 2007

Filed under: Bookish Companies, Communities, Handy — kimbooktu @ 1:28 am

You might have wondered why I did not post a lot recently. It is because of this post. I have put a lot of time and effort in the research and test drive of book cataloging websites. Why? Because I think it is very important to keep a list of your books online. Let me tell you why.

When you are as much attached to your books as I am, the worst thing that could happen is losing them. In case of a fire or some other disaster, I would not be able to save all my precious books. This is why I have all of our books safely stored online now. For insurance purposes.

If our house burns down, I will always have a list of the books we owned. This is why I urge you to catalog your books online if you own a lot of them or if are a serious collector. Cataloging your books is not only very important and reassuring; it is also a lot of fun!

Of course you do not have to use the websites dedicated to book cataloging to keep a list of your treasures. You can also make a Word or Excel document and send it to your online e-mail address and save it there. Please make sure you keep your list, or a copy of it, in a place where you can access it no matter what.

Below you will find a list of websites that enable you to catalog your books online. Most of them are free. I have tested the services of the four book cataloging websites that are around at this moment. If you disagree with my opinion, have different experiences or know of another online book cataloging service, please let me know. Click ‘more’ to see my online catalog test.

Color Coordinate your Books! October 17, 2007

Filed under: Art, Bookish Companies — kimbooktu @ 10:06 am

The hubby helps to find me links to post every once in a while. (Mostly when I am really desperate…) He found me this next link, which is quite dated. Since I never saw it before, chances are neither did you. It’s about this artist who took on the big task of color coordinating an entire bookstore. He sorted all the 20,000 books of the Adobe Books in San Francisco. The result is amazing. Click here to learn more.

Dress up. Bookish style. October 13, 2007

Filed under: Clothing — kimbooktu @ 11:00 pm

I love, love, love this. Check out this fantastic dress. If you are a librarian or book freak, this is the thing to wear to your Christmas party. If it was not so expensive, I would order it in a heartbeat. The cardigan is great too, but the dress really does it for me. Click here for the dress and here for the cardigan.

Thanks to Phoenix for the link!

So if you do not show of your library my means of a photo via ‘Your Shelves!’, you can do it on your blog via the Shelfari Widget. You can choose whether you want to show your books on a shelf or in a list. You can see the widget in action via this link.

Memoirs of a book snake… October 10, 2007

Filed under: Books about Books — kimbooktu @ 10:29 pm

It has been a while since I posted a book on books, but I promise there are more to come. If you love collecting books, especially old books, this might be of interest. “Forty years of seeking and saving old books”, is the under title of this particular book. The book is written by ‘book snake’ David Meyer. If you are a book hunter, you might learn something from this man. You can search the book inside here.

PS. I have updated the “Bookish Blog Links A-Z” list. Everyone who send me a link and/or description until now should find it in the list. There are now 204 bookish blogs listed. Keep your links and descriptions coming!
