The Smithsonian book of books July 31, 2007

Filed under: Books about Books — Kim @ 11:27 pm

It has been a while since I have posted on a book about books. This one seems quite promising. Even tough it has been around for some time. It was first published in 1992. The Smithsonian book of books is a ‘calibration’ of books, as Publishers Weekly called it. The book has 320 pages and they are stuffed with illustrations. In fact, the book has exactly 311 plates in color.

The book is written by Michael Olmert, who teaches Shakespeare at the University of Maryland, USA. He made this book into a history of books and their influence. He starts at the Egyptian papyrus and ends at the modern book fairs. He writes about a wide varity of topics; printing methods, dictionaries, the bible and much, much more. You can learn more about the book here.

PS.

I just made a new book category. In the past I just had ‘books’, but I have split it into two sections. In the categories in the sidebar, you will now find “books about books” and “books alls sorts”. The first only has books in it that are about books. The second one contains books that have to do with books, reading and libraries in general.

Wanted: your home library! July 26, 2007

Filed under: About the website — Kim @ 8:10 pm

Most of the libraries, as it stands now, are from book lovers in the United States and Canada. Since I want to show different home libraries from all over the world, I would like to receive some from Europe and Asia. And especially from South America and Africa, I have none from those regions so far.

So please people from France, Japan, Senegal, Portugal, Indonesia, Brazil or where ever you are: send in your home library! And remember: it does not have to big. It does not have to be tidy. It does not have to fit in one picture. As long as its yours, I’ll be more then happy to post it on the Your Home Library website.

Please make sure the image (only send one!) is 500 pixels wide if horizontal, or 500 pixels long if vertical. Drop a couple of lines describing your shelves to go along the photo. And do not forget to tell me your name and which country you are from!

I am looking forward to seeing your cherished collections! You can send your photo to this address.

I would like to thank everyone who e-mailed me their home libraries. I enjoy looking at them very much and by the looks of it, so do others. It makes my day when I receive a library! Some days I find even more then one in my mailbox. Thank you so much for helping me with this project. (To learn more about it and my philosophy behind it, click here.)

Banned books July 26, 2007

Filed under: Books all sorts — Kim @ 12:46 pm

The ALA has an interesting article on challenged and banned books. It seems unbelievable that books in this day and age can be challenged. And even banned. You can see the article here. They also host a “Banned Books Week” from September 29. To October 6. Click here to learn more.

I found another article on banned books, to be seen here. Consult Wikipedia here, to see which books are banned. You can explore these banned books here.

PS.

I did a post about the “banned books bracelet” in the past, click here to see it. (*Reminds the appropriate people that it’s still on my wish list*)

Rockin’ girl blogger July 24, 2007

Filed under: About the website — Kim @ 9:49 pm

At first, I thought it had something to do with my previous post. After closer inspection, I found out I am nominated as a Rockin’ girl blogger by Book Dragon. You can see the post she wrote here.

Bottom line is that we girls have to stick together. Especially girls who blog. Girls who blog rock! Now it is my turn to name four girly bloggers, since those are the rules.  I tried to fiend four female bloggers that have not been nominated before. This is my list, in no particular order.

- 50 books

- Booklust

- Books, Words and Writing

- Austen-tatious

Al they have to do, if they are not tired of it, is name four female bloggers who they think rock!

Games for reading July 24, 2007

Filed under: Books all sorts, Games — Kim @ 9:59 am

If you like (your) children to read more, this book seems like a lot of fun. It is called “Games for reading” by Peggy Kaye. Whilst playing games out of the book, they are supposed to get enthusiastic about reading. This book is also suitable for people who work with children. There are some notes for teachers included. You can learn more about the book and search inside here.

Filed under: Handy — Kim @ 9:34 am

What mood are you in today? If you have difficulty finding a book that fits your mood, this site might help. I never would have thought there would be a site like this, but apparently it does exist. Just move the bar to resemble your mood and the appropriate book is suggested. You can even choose audio books or large print. Click here to go to the website.

(You can also visit this next website. Just enter the title and the author of the last book you read and the website tells you what to read next. Click here to give it a try.)
