The anatomy of bibliomania June 7, 2007

Filed under: Books about Books — kimbooktu @ 11:15 pm

This book about books by Jackson Holbrook is on “the usefulness, purpose, and pleasures that proceed from books.” He writes about the psychology behind reading. Why we read, how we read and about what happens to us when we pick up a book. As I understand this, he does it all in a witty manner.

He also writes about authors and their love for books, as well as everything that comes with bibliomania. The search for books, the look of books, the care for them, the housing of books. But he also mentions the fear of books and how this source of knowledge is and has been insulted. I would personally love to read this one! It seems very interesting. If anyone read it, please let me know via the comments! You can learn more about the book and look inside it here.

Bookish stationary cabinet June 5, 2007

Unfortunately I do not get to write much ‘real’ letters these days. I write a card to a friend every once in a while, but that is it. A shame, really. After seeing this very pretty stationary cabinet, I am even more sorry. I would love to own it, but since I do not write letters I have no use for it. If you do, you can find it directly here. Or click here to see the cabinet and more bookish goodies.

Bookish china June 4, 2007

Sip tea with Oscar Wilde or eat cereal with Thomas Hardy. The Brithish Library Shop has made china with quotations of the great writers on it. I love that they have kept it simple. White china, black letters. The quotes are in the actcual handwriting of the authors, which gives it an extra nice touch. You can find the china, and more bookish products, here.

Kimbooktu Newsletter June 1, 2007

Filed under: About the website — kimbooktu @ 11:44 pm

I have just send out a newsletter to let Kimbooktu readers know I have prolonged the contest with a week. This made me think of the whole newsletter idea. Sometimes, I send e-mails to my regular readers. But you might like the occasional (promise!) newsletter as well. Maybe, you are a regular reader, but you are not on my list.

I have checked out those newsletter programmes, but I do not like them. That is why I do it the old fashioned way. (Copy paste into Word.) If you like to receive a Kimbooktu newsletter every now and then, please send me an e-mail with the subject “Kimbooktu newsletter”. I will then put you on my highly advanced mailing list. You can click here to send it.

It goes without saying that I will handle your e-mailaddress discretely. I will not provide anybody else with it.

Book by book… June 1, 2007

Filed under: Books about Books — kimbooktu @ 10:54 pm

…Notes on reading and life. Every now and then I post a book about books. I have one for you today. This book is written by Michael Dirda, a staff writer of the Washington Post Book World. It is all about reading and the important lessons you can learn from it. So it seems to be a bit philosophical on the act of reading too. Which, in my book, is a good thing.

Dirda also gives you fragments from books he think are must reads. If I may believe the critics, he makes well read and intelligent choices. With this book Dirda tries to inspire people to read and learn from the books they ingest. He also gives you tips on how you get can other people to read. Interesting!

Click here to learn more ánd browse inside the book! If you like to read more about books on books, just go to the cloud of categories and browse thru the ‘books’ category.

Bedtime reading June 1, 2007

I found this great ‘product’ via the great blog 50books. It is a blanket made as a book. You can actually read it whilst lying in bed. And turn the pages! The blanket is part of an art project called Sleepless, the designing of the blankets is part of this, under the title “Bedtime stories”. You can find out more about the bookish blanket here.

Filed under: About the website — kimbooktu @ 8:21 am

Due to the not so big amount of entries, I have decided to prolong the entry time for the contest with a week. I hope you do not mind. Luckily, the entries are coming in daily now. Hopefully we have more entries to enjoy next week. So the new deadline is Saturday June 9. The winners will be announced the week after that, on Saturday June 16.
